Ron's Andean World

Ruiz

A bright Sunday afternoon in the Peruvian Andes suddenly becomes a horrible nightmare separating two people on a mission to change the government and culture of the nation. As a powerful earthquake triggers a landslide that strands Cori Ramirez on a hill-top cemetery, Padre Jose Ruiz is buried on the road to Succha seventy miles away.

Even this event doesn't prepare them for the horrors of the Shining Path terrorist war against the government and the government's brutal response.

Ruiz's phenomenal gift as an artist and his need for love and a family are not enough to save him. His only hope lies in a peasanty beauty, an old Luftwaffe pilot, a coca farmer and his daughter's love.

Cori's love of revolution surpasses all others, and that love exacts a terrible price.

This the story of enormous natural and cultural cataclysms set in the incredibly beautiful and dangerous Peruvian Andes

Three Valleys

Peace Corps Volunteer Paul Kostner goes to a small town in the Peruvian Andes to build a bathroom for an elementary school. There, he meets and falls in love with a young peasant woman named Tamia. Tamia has a small child and a mother who depends on her to help in the fields. Even though they love each other, they separate. After many lonely months, he dates Elena. Paul is suspicious that Elena is trying to have his child and keep it a secret. As Paul is set to journey home to the U.S., he barely survives the earthquake of 1970 that killed 70,000 people. He is led to believe that Elena is one of the casualties. He cannot fully accept that. Paul arrives back in Wisconsin with PTSD and culture shock, using alcohol to cope. He separates himself from faculty parties and a lover to return to his roots in the countryside. With the help of rural neighbors, he begins a long healing process as he restores beauty and nature to a junkyard farmstead. The Three Valleys are the Valley of Love with Tamia, the Valley of Terror and Loss in the earthquake and the Valley of Renewal as he regains his health and sanity by restoring the farmstead.

They said she was dead. So, she didn't have his child in the Peruvian Andes. Finally, his obsessive worry about leaving his child in a war-torn society has healed. After failed relationships, Paul Kostner finds himself healthy, but alone.

He has been careful about how he helps Tamia, his true love because she fears that local Shining Path terrorists would accuse her of spying through Paul to the CIA.

Then, Paul gets the shocking news that Elena is alive, and he has an eighteen-year-old child living somewhere in Peru. The window of opportunity to find his child is narrowing daily as the communist terrorists appear ready to take over the country.

The story moves from Paul's serene country farm, his daughter and neighbors to the wildly dangerous Andes Mountains.

It is about a former Luftwaffe pilot turned art collector; a peasant turned coca paste producer, a sweetheart turned terrorist courier, a local Prefect experiencing imminent death, an elementary school teacher turned killer and a woman's undying love.
